HBSCNY CENTENNIAL SUMMIT PROGRAM

DATE
September 23, 2008 at The Harvard Club, New York City

TOPIC AREAS
We will offer three topic areas from which participants
can select the sessions they prefer to attend:
1. MANAGEMENT & STRATEGY
2. ACCOUNTABILITY & GOVERNANCE
3. DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

SESSION TOPICS
Participants will attend 4 sessions throughout the day, selecting from any topic area. Invitations in June will provide attendees a chance to list their preferences.

Topic Area #1:
MANAGEMENT & STRATEGY

1. Global & U.S. Trends: Implications for Funding
Increasing expectations and demands made by donors, foundations and other funding sources present both challenges and opportunities. Discussion will highlight funding trends and implications for non-profits, to set the stage for the next 20 years of social enterprise.

2. Global Trends in Operating Entrepreneurial Social Ventures
As social and environmental problems increase in magnitude and scope, non-profit models that depend solely on grants and donations for funding are finding it difficult to respond to the challenges effectively. In response, many are devising innovative resource mobilizing strategies that are consistent with their mission while creating wealth generation opportunities among some of the world’s poorest.

3. Strategic Planning… the Next Steps
Once a non-profit has defined its vision, built its organization and begun operations, what happens next and how does it navigate change? Topics will include refining business models, the growth imperative, ensuring sustainability, measuring outcomes, crisis management, and shifting missions.

4. The Right People For the Right Time
How to determine the appropriate kinds of expertise, skills and talent needed to achieve a non-profit’s objective? Where do you find it?

Topic Area #2:
ACCOUNTABILITY & GOVERNANCE

5. Strategies for Achieving Impact
Multiple stakeholders are increasingly seeking measurable results. Discussion will highlight defining a non-profit’s desired impact and the appropriate performance measures for evaluating these results.

6. Attracting & Managing the Board
Maximizing the effectiveness of the Board of Directors is a key to success. Discussion will highlight the importance of establishing criteria to achieve the right mix of board members (e.g., functions, industries, backgrounds represented), how to attract effective members, and how to measure and evaluate board performance.

7. Board Oversight and Fiduciary Responsibility
In an increasingly litigious environment, key responsibilities of the Board must not be overlooked. Discussion will include the legal and financial role of the trustee, given the unique nature of a non-profit board.

8. Differentiating the Roles of the Board and Management
Key responsibilities of the Board should be clearly distinct from those of management. How does an active board and management team work together to maximize results?

Topic Area #3:

DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

9. Creative Marketing and Branding
Marketing and branding are as critical for a non-profit as for any for-profit corporation, in some ways, even more so. Many of the current advances in global corporate branding and communications are providing models for local and regional non-profits. Likewise, corporations are trying to find ways to engage with their customers on the heart level. Hear how non-profit leaders are exploiting both trends.

10. The Revolution in Pro-bono Professional Services
Pro-bono resources are increasingly becoming available from professional organizations nationwide. How to best take advantage of strategic philanthropy and tap into this opportunity.

11. Leveraging Web 2.0 Technology
Recent advances offer new strategic directions and opportunities for non-profits. Hear how to leverage the web to improve non-profit management and marketing while strengthening a sense of community.

12. Appealing to the Next Generation of Philanthropists
In the last few years, social venture funds and new foundations have joined individual entrepreneurs, seeking to become personally involved in societal change. This session will examine some of these new trends that are emerging in the USA.
