Spend an evening with Ruth Abram, President and Founder of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Tour the Museum's landmark tenement building and participate in a discussion of the management process in an organization which has, since its founding in 1988 become a leadership model in the museum community. Ruth will talk about how the Museum was formed, how its programs are funded today and how its mission is fulfilled with current and future programs.
The Museum's building at 97 Orchard St. was home to nearly 7,000 immigrants from more than 20 nations between 1863 and 1935. The mission of the Museum is: "To promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America." Anchored in a neighborhood that has long been home to thousands of low-income and working class people. The Tenement Museum is dedicated to using the history of its site as a tool for addressing issues that are still pressing today, including immigration, urban housing and public welfare. The Tenement is a designated historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
In the eighteen years since its founding, the Museum has restored apartments in its tenement building to represent real families of different ethnicities who lived there at some point during the building's 72 year active life. They have also moved on to supporting the local immigrant population and leading the development of the International Coalition of Historic Museums of Conscience.
Abram is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College with an MSW from the Florence Heller School at Brandeis University. Ms. Abram also holds an MA in American History from New York University where she was a Kennan Fellow. Prior to founding the museum she was the Executive Director of the Woman's Action Alliance, a national clearing house on women's issues. Before that, Ms. Abram served as Program Director for the American Civil Liberties Union; Executive Director of the Norman Foundation; and Title VII Coordinator for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
