The US market is potentially a very attractive place to expand for non-US banks with a strong base overseas. A number of the major competitors have disappeared, been acquired, are distracted, or have shrunk dramatically. TARP money taken by most U.S. banks comes with compensation restrictions that affect attractiveness of open positions for financial services professionals. We will discuss for each of the banks included their strategy and focus for the US market, structural and regulatory issues they face, expansion plans, and hiring plans.

Thomas Decoene, President, Itau USA Securities
Born in Belgium in 1953, Thomas Decoene moved to Brazil in 1971 and lived there14 years working for Citibank. In 1985 he was transferred to NY where we worked at the investment banking division. In 1990 Mr. Decoene moved to Tokyo to head the emerging market group division. In 1992 he joined LTCB Latin America Inc. (a wholly owned US broker dealer of The Long Term Credit Bank of Japan), as the Managing Partner in Tokyo, and in 1995 as the CEO in New York. In 1998 he joined GE Capital Markets Services in Stamford USA, to build an emerging market syndication group. In 2000, Mr. Decoene was transferred to Tokyo to head up GE Capital’s Capital Markets Services. In Nov 2001 he was elected the founding President of the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo, Japan. In 2003 he moved to Luxemburg to run the European operations of UNIBANCO. In April 2005 he joined Itau Securities Inc. in New York, as President.
Robert D. Redmond, Vice Chairman, Macquarie Capital (USA) Inc
Rob Redmond is Vice Chairman of Macquarie Capital (USA) Inc., having joined the firm in March 2009. Mr. Redmond has a distinguished reputation as an experienced senior advisor across multiple sectors. Mr. Redmond jo ined Macquarie Capital from Barclays Capital, where he held the title of Vice Chairman. Prior to his role as Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital, Mr. Redmond was a Vice Chairman of Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. and Chairman of the firm's Global Financial Sponsor coverage business. During his 14 years at Lehman, Mr. Redmond ran several global businesses for the firm including founding Lehman's Financial Sponsors business and playing a central role in building the firm's Industrials and Leveraged Finance businesses to leading positions in the US and in other markets around the world.
Mr Redmond holds a BA in Economics from Lafayette College and received his MBA degree from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. He currently serves as a member of The Cornell University Council and as a member of The Johnson Graduate School of Management Advisory Board.
Edward N. Speal, Managing Director, Head of Structured Finance, Americas
Edward Speal is responsible for BNP Paribas’ Structured Finance activities in North and South America. For the year s 2005 to 2008 he was President and C.E.O, BNP Paribas (Canada). Based in Toronto and Montreal, he was responsible for BNP Paribas’ businesses in Canada. Previously he headed up the Bank’s teams covering the Energy, Project Finance and Corporate sectors in Canada. He was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Paribas Bank of Canada from 1996 to 2000. Prior to 1997 he was the global head of commodity derivatives for Banque Paribas based out of New York.
In addition, Mr. Speal is a member of the Board of Directors of InterOil Corporation, a Canadian energy company with operations in Papua New Guinea. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Queen’s University at Kingston. Mr. Speal is a Canadian citizen and is a graduate of Queen’s University.
Fernando Sotelino, Adjunct Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University
Fernando Sotelino has been Adjunct Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia Universit y since 2005. He is also a director of the advisory board of Brasilpar (M&A advisory boutique, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and a Senior Operating Partner for private equity investments in Latin America of Advent International (Boston, U.S.).
Professor Sotelino was President of Unibanco (Brazil's third largest private sector bank) from April 1998 to May 2004, after seven years (1991-1998) in charge of the bank's international and investment banking divisions. Prior to that he had spent five years (1986-1991) with Citibank, as Managing Director responsible for the bank's M&A advisory, privatization and private equity activities in Brazil, and seven years (1979 -1986) with Crocker Bank (San Francisco, California), dedicated to corporate advisory and project financing situations in the U.S., Latin America and Asia.
Before embracing his executive career, he was Associate Professor of International Finance at the Graduate School of Business of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPEAD). Professor Sotelino holds an M.A. in Economics and an MBA from Stanford University, and a M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
