Panel I: Emerging Managers & First Time Private Equity Funds: The Fund of Funds & Seeders Perspectives
Charles H. van Horne, Managing Director, Abbott Capital Management
Mr. van Horne’s responsibilities include development of Abbott Capital Management’s $6.0 billion fund of fund activities,
client services and assisting institutional investors in the formulation and development of their private equity strategies. Mr. van Horne has over 20 years of experience in private equity in the U.S., Europe and the emerging markets, including establishing and managing teams focused on funds of funds, direct investment partnerships, individual direct investments, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and project finance. Prior to joining Abbott in 2001, he was a Managing Director of AIG Capital Partners, Inc. and, previously, he established and managed the private equity investment activities of Creditanstalt International Advisors. He began his career in 1973 at Bankers Trust where he served in its Merchant Bank, its M&A Group, and other functions in New York and London. Mr. van Horne received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and is on the Board of Directors of the Roothbert Educational Foundation and on the Finance Committee of the ICMA.
Hugh Lamle, President, M.D. Sass 
Mr. Lamle is President of M.D. Sass Investors Services, Inc., managing over $6 billion in separate accounts, hedge funds, private equity funds and mutual funds. The firm’s clients include major pension funds, insurance companies, trusts, endowments, charitable funds, corporations and high net worth individuals. Additionally, he is President and founder of M.D. Sass-Macquarie Financial Strategies Management LLC, (FinStrat) which invests in new investment management company start ups and buy outs. Mr. Lamle has been a senior executive of M.D. Sass since 1974.
From 1995 to 2001, Mr. Lamle was also President, CIO and CEO of Chase & M.D. Sass Partners, a joint venture between The Chase Manhattan Bank and M.D. Sass Investors Services, Inc. M.D. Sass sold its interest in this $20 billion joint venture to J.P. Morgan Chase. Mr. Lamle was formerly Vice Chairman of the BOD of the FINEX and was on the Board of Governors of the New York Board of Trade until it was acquired in 2007 by the Intercontinental Commodities Exchange (ICE). He is now on the Board of ICE Futures US. Mr. Lamle was a founder of Real Estate Capital Partners in 1989 and served as President of its Managing General Partner until 2005 when M.D. Sass sold its interest in this $5.5 billion real estate investor and developer. Mr. Lamle has a BA and MBA from City University of N.Y.
Shad Azimi, Founder and Managing Partner, Vanterra Capital 
Shad Azimi is a Partner and the founder of Vanterra Capital, a global private equity firm that manages assets for a diverse investor base and utilizes a “fund of partnerships” approach, establishing strategic relationships with leading small and emerging private equity managers to build premier investment organizations. Mr. Azimi has over twelve years of global private equity investment experience. Prior to founding Vanterra, he was a principal at NYL Capital, a $7 billion private equity program sponsored by New York Life Investment Management ($246 billion in assets under management) and 26 third-party institutional investors. His primary role was to identify, evaluate, and execute investment opportunities for the firm’s fund investment program and direct investment funds. Mr. Azimi also led the “Small and Emerging Manager Program,” an initiative designed to target smaller and emerging private equity funds in the United States, Europe, and emerging markets. Through this effort, Mr. Azimi has established a strong network of private equity relationships worldwide. He also played a key role in the formation of several joint ventures, including India-focused and Asian-focused private equity funds. Prior to that, Mr. Azimi was an Associate at Lightyear Capital, a multi-billion dollar control-oriented private equity fund as well as an Associate in the private equity group of UBS/PaineWebber Capital. Mr. Azimi began his career as an Investment Banking Analyst at PaineWebber, Inc. Mr. Azimi received his B.S. with dual concentrations in Finance and International Business from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. He earned his MBA as a Beta Gamma Sigma graduate from Columbia Business School.
Alan Mattamana, Principal, Fairview Capital 
Mr. Mattamana joined Fairview in 2009 and is a member of Fairview’s investment team. He is involved in a broad set of activities, including due diligence, investment monitoring, and business development. Prior to Fairview, he was a Principal with Polaris Venture Partners, a venture capital firm with over $3.3 billion under management. Mr. Mattamana joined Polaris in 2002 and focused on investment opportunities in the medical technology, healthcare services, information technology, digital media, consumer, and business services industries. At Polaris, he served as Board Observer to several life sciences portfolio companies including Advion BioSciences and GI Dynamics. Mr. Mattamana also led the India investment efforts at Polaris. Before joining Polaris, Mr. Mattamana was a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co.’s Silicon Valley office, where he served clients in the high tech sector. He also has previous experience at Goldman Sachs, Neuberger Berman and LibertyView Capital, a multi-strategy hedge fund. Mr. Mattamana obtained a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
David Goldstein, Partner, White & Case 
Mr. Goldstein, as Co-Head of the Investment Funds Practice, focuses on the establishment and representation of private investment funds including both domestic and international private equity and hedge funds. His clients include merchant banking and LBO funds, real estate opportunity and value funds, international real estate funds and emerging markets funds with management teams located around the world. Mr. Goldstein’s experience representing hedge funds and their managers is equally diverse, and his clients include large, well-established funds and managers based outside the U.S. investing in non-U.S. markets, as well as first-time funds of high quality emerging managers. He also represents fund sponsors in structuring their governance and compensation arrangements, and investors in alternative assets.
Prior to joining White & Case, Mr. Goldstein was a partner at a leading law firm for three years and an associate for eight years at another large firm. Before entering law school, he was a manager in the corporate tax department of a major accounting firm, where he also worked in the audit department. Mr. Goldstein is a frequent speaker at industry seminars. He has co-authored articles like “Tax Considerations in Structuring U.S.-Based Private Equity Funds,”

Gregory V. Stento, Managing Director, HarbourVest 
Greg Stento joined HarbourVest in 1998 and focuses on partnership investments. He also serves on the advisory boards of several private equity partnerships. Mr. Stento joined HarbourVest from Comdisco Ventures, where he was a managing director and provided equity and debt capital to startup and emerging growth technology and life sciences companies. Prior to Comdisco, he was a general partner at Horsley Bridge Partners, where he was responsible for making and managing investments in a variety of private equity partnerships and companies. Mr. Stento also spent six years in marketing and sales at NCR Corporation, where he focused on information technology solutions for financial institutions. He received a BS (with distinction) from Cornell University in 1982 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1989.
Stephane Chevrier, Managing Director, AXA Private Equity 
Stéphane Chevrier is currently Managing Director of AXA Private Equity Partners, one of the leading Private Equity firms which manages and advises $26 billion in AUM. AXA’s returns have been sustained throughout economic cycles and are among the best in the market, in the Funds of Funds and Direct Funds category. Mr. Chevrier joined AXA Private Equity in 2002. Previously, Stephane worked as a Senior Auditor at KPMG Audit in Paris. Prior to that, he worked in London at Mazars and Guérard as a Junior Auditor. He has a joint MBA from Université Paris IX-Dauphine and University of Québec-Montreal, with a Masters of Finance from Université Cergy-Pontoise and is a French CPA.
Andrew Kwee, Principal, LGT Capital Partners 
Mr. Andrew Kwee is currently a Principal at LGT Capital Partners (USA) Inc., a leading alternative investment manager based in Switzerland, with affiliated offices in New York, London, Dublin, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The Firm manages USD 18 billion in hedge fund and private equity assets and has an international team of more than 160 professionals. Mr. Kwee is based in the firm's New York office and leads its US private equity efforts. Previously, Mr. Kwee worked at GIC Special Investments Pte Ltd. as a Senior Vice President. He spent ten years at the firm and was responsible for establishing and managing its New York office. Before joining GIC, he worked in project management for Tishman Realty and Construction Corporation. Mr. Kwee holds an M.B.A. degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in Civil Engineering from Stanford University.
Michael J. Kelly, Managing Director, Hamilton Lane 
Mr. Kelly is a Managing Director at Hamilton Lane where he is responsible for due diligence of primary fund investment opportunities and serves as a member of the Investment Committee. Previously Mr. Kelly was responsible for managing the client relationship and reporting activities of the firm, as well as the analysis of venture investment opportunities. He serves on a number of fund advisory boards including Oak Investment Partners, Polaris Venture Partners and Cardinal Health Partners. Prior to joining Hamilton Lane, Mr. Kelly was a Financial Analyst for InterMountain Canola Company and a Financial Analyst for DNA Plant Technology. He received an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary and a B.S. from Trenton State College.
