Panel I: Capital Raising for Emerging Hedge Funds: An Institutional Investor Perspective

David Shukis, Director of Investment Manager Research, Cambridge Associates LLC
Mr. Shukis manages a group of over 100 investment professionals researching managers in all asset classes and geographies, for the benefit of Cambridge Associates’ diverse client base of endowments and foundations, pension funds, family offices, and other institutional investors.   Prior to taking on his current role in 2011, Mr. Shukis managed the firm’s hedge fund advisory practice, which oversees more than $20 billion in hedge fund investments for close to 300 clients.   Earlier in his 23-year career at Cambridge, Mr. Shukis worked as a consultant advising a wide range of endowed institutions, corporate pension funds, and family groups. Before joining Cambridge Associates, he worked in commercial lending and project finance at Bank of Boston and Bank of New England.   David is a CFA charterholder and holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (BA), Brown University (MA), and Harvard University (MBA).  He is a member of the Boston Security Analysts Society and a member of the Board of Directors of Boston Lyric Opera.

Lisette Cooper, Founder, CIO, CEO, Managing Director, Athena Capital Advisors
Lisette Cooper is the founder, Chief Investment Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Athena Capital Advisors. As CIO, she sets the firm’s overall direction and leads Athena’s Investment Committee. Ms. Cooper founded the firm in 1993. Athena Capital provides investment advisory and management services to sophisticated private investors, institutions and endowments. We work in partnership with our clients to serve as their chief investment officer and investment staff and integrate a broad range of services into a comprehensive investment solution for our clients. Athena Capital has ranked #1 in “Average Assets under Management per Client Family” by Advisor One (formerly Wealth Manager) for the past 3 years and was recently named amongst the Top 50 Family Offices Worldwide by Bloomberg Markets. Ms. Cooper speaks regularly at conferences and universities and has appeared on CNBC’s “Closing Bell”. She is a CFA charterholder and has a Ph.D. from Harvard University and B.A. from Wesleyan University.

Marcus Siezing, Director of Investments, Dillon Trust Company
Mr. Siezing oversees the firm wide investment and asset allocation process for a global, marketable and private, portfolio of assets. Responsibilities include strategy, risk management, manager selection, and due diligence.  Mr. Siezing has over 14 years of investment experience including direct investments, equity research, risk management, and asset allocation.  Mr. Siezing has degrees from leading universities in United Kingdom and Canada. Mr. Siezing is a CFA charterholder and has served in the Swedish Armed Forces.


Moderator: Hemali Dassani, Managing Director, Old City Investment Partners

Ms. Hemali Dassani is currently a Managing Director at Old City Investment Partners and helps discover high quality investments for the firm’s clientele of family office and institutional investors.  Previously, Ms. Dassani was at Diamond Edge Capital Partners where her clients were leading private equity, hedge fund / fund-of-funds, infrastructure, and real estate firms looking to aggressively increase their asset base and participate in global investor road shows. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School, a BSc in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University, and attended the GSB at The University of Chicago. She is President of the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York, and sits on the Steering Committee for the HBS Alumni Angels Network.


Panel II: Emerging Hedge Fund War Stories: The Inside Perspective

David Lyon, Director, Ellis Lake Capital
David Lyon is the Director of Research at Ellis Lake Capital, LLC. Previously, he was a Portfolio Manager of D. E. Shaw & Co., L.P.'s U.S. credit opportunities book, a multi-billion dollar portfolio of credit and equity investments with a team of ten junior investment professionals. Prior to joining the D. E. Shaw Group in 2007, Mr. Lyon was a Managing Director and an Investment Committee member at The Cypress Group, LLC, a $3.5 billion private equity fund. Before that, he worked as an analyst at Och-Ziff Capital Management and Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Lyon graduated from the University of Notre Dame, summa cum laude, and has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Mark Plunkett, Partner and Managing Director, Capital Tactics
Prior to joining Capital Tactics, Mr. Plunkett co-founded Hilliard Street Capital, a long/short hedge fund seeded by the Blackstone Strategic Alliance Fund and Bridger Capital from 2008 until 2011.  From 2003 until 2008, Mr. Plunkett served as a Partner at Atlas Capital, a long/short hedge fund with a focus on short selling.  Prior to Atlas, Mr. Plunkett worked as a Senior Associate with the Carlyle Group and as an analyst with Hicks, Muse.  He started his investing career as an Associate with Cardinal Investment Company after serving as a Business Analyst for McKinsey.  Mr. Plunkett earned his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 2002, and was Co-President of his Class.  Mr. Plunkett graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Economics and a B.B.A. in Finance and Organizational Behavior from Southern Methodist University.  Mr. Plunkett is a Fulbright Scholar.

Howard Rubin, CFA, Managing Member and COO, Midwood Capital Management LLC
Mr. Rubin serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Midwood Capital. Mr. Rubin is primarily responsible for all of the non-investment activities of the Investment Manager including fund accounting, client service and marketing, and compliance. Prior to joining Midwood Capital Management LLC, Mr. Rubin was a Managing Member and Chief Operating Officer of Tara Hill Capital Management LP, a Boston-based US long/short equity hedge fund firm he helped form. Mr. Rubin was previously the Senior Managing Partner of Boldwater Capital Management, a $300 million long/short hedge fund organization based in Boston, MA. Before forming Boldwater in 2001, Mr. Rubin spent 17 years and was a Director and member of the executive committee at Standish, Ayer & Wood, Inc. (now Standish Mellon Asset Management), an investment firm with approximately $41 billion in assets under management. Mr. Rubin received an MBA from Harvard Business School and holds a BBA in Finance and Accounting from The George Washington University.

Mr. Throop joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch in 2008 where he is responsible for the BofAML Prime Brokerage Business Consulting team. Mr. Throop and his team work closely with senior-level management of hedge funds at all life stages; from Startup to Institutional, covering areas, such as Cost Optimization, Operations, Front-to-Back Office Technology and Regulation.  Prior to BofAML, he was at Deloitte for 11 years, where he was lead for Deloitte’s Securities Practice. During his time at Deloitte, he led both Buy and Sell side projects covering all areas of People, Process, and Technology.
