Three decades ago, Bobbi Brown launched her namesake brand, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, while working as a makeup artist and raising three small children in Montclair, NJ. The brand took off, and became incredibly successful in just a few years and was acquired by Estee Lauder Companies in 1995. Brown stayed with the company for 22 years before deciding to do something new.
Last year, she started Jones Road Beauty, a “clean no-makeup makeup,” featuring products that are free from sulfates, parabens and phthalates.
“It’s incredible to be in my shoes right now, especially with COVID and everything that’s happening. I just realized, the rules are yours to make,” Brown observed at Fortune’s ‘Most Powerful Women Summit’ in Washington, DC, recently.
Launching the new company meant she could be her own boss and a new challenge that she could embrace. After a successful exit and years of experience, Brown is keenly aware of her strengths and weaknesses. At Jones Road, she is the chief creative officer.
“For me, power is being able to do what I love, what I believe in, give back, meet new people, experience new opportunities, and reach out to amazing connections I have,” Brown said. “Power is also being happy, because happiness is the best cosmetic for beauty in the world.”
With the stress of the pandemic now mostly in the rearview mirror and with more people returning to the workplace, the HBS Club of New York decided to invite Brown for an exclusive conversation. Brown will look back on her illustrious career, outline the challenges and opportunities of her new venture, and share life lessons that have served her well.
