Description

PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIRED TO BOARD SHIP

On June 6, 2023, the HBS Club of N.Y. is pleased to offer a unique event on board Viking’s newest ocean ship, the Viking Saturn. The Viking Saturn was delivered on April 26 th in Italy and will be named in New York.

The event will begin with a tour of the Viking Saturn while she is in New York for the day, followed by refreshments. After the tour, we will hear a presentation from Viking’s Chairman (fellow HBS alumn), Torstein Hagen, on managing a cruise line in challenging times and his outlook for the future.

A cruise line is a highly capital-intensive business. Managing the operations and global team during a pandemic while expanding a fleet during temporary suspension and then ramping up to resume operations was a highly complex undertaking. No course at HBS could have prepared management for what the industry faced in recent years. Despite facing a pandemic, a war and historic droughts in both Europe and the U.S., Viking continues to grow and thrive. Viking’s customers rave about its service and its staff talks about Viking as a family.

Boarding time is 1:00PM. Because this will be a large event on board a ship, each registrant will need to provide us with an ID (like a driver’s license or passport) ahead of the event. The rules of the TSA and the Port of New York require all participants, when registering and boarding, provide their I.D. details including birthday, nationality, ID type, and issue & expiration date. Upon boarding, you will be asked to provide this same ID at embarkation in exchange for a visitor pass. Your ID will be returned when you return the pass and disembark the ship.

Participants can also provide their emails so Viking can contact people who might inadvertently leave something on the ship.

Torstein Hagen, MBA 1968

Founder and Chairman of Viking Cruises

Torstein Hagen is Chairman of Viking, the leading small ship travel company offering river, ocean and expedition voyages on all seven continents. Viking was established in 1997 with the purchase of four ships in Russia and the vision that travel could be more destination focused and culturally immersive.

The company expanded into the American market in 2000, establishing a sales and marketing office in Los Angeles, California. Since then, Viking has grown to be the world’s leading river line and in 2022 was voted the #1 River Line by both _Condé Nast Traveler_ and _Travel + Leisure_.

Hagen announced the company’s entry into ocean voyages in 2013, and in 2015 Viking introduced its first ocean ship with the naming of the 930-guest all-veranda _Viking Star_. Viking has been consistently named the #1 Ocean Line in _Travel + Leisure_’s World’s Best Awards and in 2022 was also named the #1 Ocean Line in _Condé Nast Traveler_’s Readers’ Choice Awards. Viking’s award-winning fleet of identical all-veranda sister ships includes the _Viking Sea_, the _Viking Sky_, the _Viking Orion_, the _Viking Jupiter_, the _Viking Venus_, the _Viking Mars_ and the _Viking Neptune_. The _Viking Saturn_ joins the fleet in 2023.

Viking marked its 25th anniversary in 2022; during this milestone year the company launched Viking Expeditions—with the purpose-built _Viking Octantis_ and _Viking Polaris_ sailing voyages in Antarctica and the Great Lakes—as well as two new, identical ocean ships and new purpose-built vessels in Europe and on the Nile, Mekong and Mississippi Rivers.

A Norway native, Hagen has extensive experience in the shipping and cruise industries and from 1980–1984 held the CEO position at Royal Viking Line, the industry-leading cruise line of its time. He also served as a member of the board of directors for Holland America Line and Kloster Cruise Ltd., and was a partner of the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in Europe. As the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, he studied computers at Wesleyan University. He holds a degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, where he completed his Master’s Thesis related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Hagen also holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University.
