Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) gives these young men the social and work skills
needed to find and keep jobs, further their education and avoid future incarceration.
Nonprofit: Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO)
GOSO now serves 1,800 young men a year who are in, or newly released, from Rikers Island and
upstate prisons. Its 2-week Job Readiness Curriculum features workshops on career exploration,
interview techniques, workplace conduct and health and hygiene. Those completing the program
successfully can go on to 3-month paid internships or study for a high school equivalency diploma.
Tackling a Critical National Problem
CEO Mark Goldsmith, who founded GOSO in 2004, has had the opportunity to personally brief
President Trump and key legislators on how GOSO’s programs are reshaping the lives of thousands of
young men, while reducing recidivism, crime and poverty. The recidivism rate for GOSO enrollees, at
15%, is far below the 50% to 60% that is typical for these young men.
Project: Strategic Growth
With an annual budget approaching $3.5 million and a solid record of achievement and recognition,
GOSO is inviting a Community Partners team of HBS alums to evaluate strategic growth choices that
could help many more at-risk young men.
