Late last year, Deirdre Mahlan laid out three priorities for the sprawling spirits company in an interview with an industry publication: Have a clear portfolio strategy; use data and analytics to support growth and better execution; and last, strengthen Diageo’s brand equity over the long term by increasing its marketing spend and making it more effective.
Diageo is one of the world’s largest liquor companies with an enviable list of brands: Johnnie Walker, Ciroc, Ketel One, Baileys, Don Julio, Captain Morgan, Tanqueray and more. In short, there is something for everyone at Diageo.
With annual revenues of $20 billion, the company has significant scale and market presence all over. Diageo’s innovation culture also is the envy of its competitors. The company uses macroeconomic and demographic data to predict what will happen in specific brands and categories. Last year, Diageo introduced Ketel One Botanicals.
“The Botanicals have been performing really well. The great news is that the data suggest there’s very little cannibalization, and that the Botanicals are recruiting consumers from white wine. We’re getting a significant amount of volume on the Botanicals and the core vodka has improved its performance as well,” noted Mahlan in the same interview.
Deirdre Mahlan will join the HBS Club of NY to give us an overview of the company, challenges and opportunities and share leadership lessons.
