Description

Join us for a captivating discussion with Substack’s co-founder and CEO, Chris Best to discuss how Substack is creating a new model for quality writing in the age of the internet, built on a direct relationship between writers and readers.

Substack is a subscription newsletter company whose goal is to build a better business model for writing. In a recent interview in the New York Times, The CEO Chris Best described his desire to “shift how we experience culture on the internet” and to bring “art into the world…., Substack in its fullest ambition is kind of this alternate universe on the internet.”

Substack has transformed the media landscape by making it easier than ever for anyone to start a subscription newsletter, and be paid directly by their readers. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is trying “to create new opportunities for some high-profile journalists to capitalize on their personal brands, potentially earn more income and get greater editorial autonomy than they typically enjoy.” Substack and other platforms make it easy for writers with followings to “distribute and monetize their own newsletters.”

Founded in 2017 by Chris Best, Hamish McKenzie, and Jairaj Sethi, Substack participated in Y Combinator and is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, among other investors. The company announced in November 2021 that they had more than 1 million paid subscriptions to newsletters on the platform.

Best will discuss the story of Substack’s founding and its growth into a leading subscription newsletter company. He will touch upon the shifts in the media landscape and the implications for journalists, writers and producers in the arts as well as readers and how things will continue to shift in the future. Best will talk about his experience as an entrepreneur in an emerging landscape and how his past experiences prepared him to found and lead Substack.
