Working with the Inner Critic: Lead a Full & Authentic Life – ALUMNI ONLY / IN-PERSON

Fri, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM TO BE DETERMINED
Alumni OnlyCareer & Leadership

Description

The inner critic, that interior voice of self-doubt and comparison to the lives and accomplishments of others, is a human archetype that manifests even more intensely in high achievement individuals. It is no stranger to HBS graduates. It can sap energy and initiative and cast doubt on our own instincts for the best path forward. However, if understood, it can also draw our attention to important aspects of our own wishes for a fuller and more authentic life.

In this highly interactive workshop we will:

  • Work in small groups composed of your fellow alumni following established protocols for understanding the messages we received from our families concerning what constitutes success, failure and happiness.
  • Learn and use the Memetic Theory of Rene Girard to begin to understand how we, mostly unconsciously, develop connections to our own particular “model/rivals” to whom we repeatedly turn to as points of comparison.
  • Find out what it means to establish a relationship with the inner critic so that we can more skillfully recognize its subversive action.
  • Discover practices for overcoming negativity brought by the critic and gain insight into the wisdom that may be hidden in the critic’s message.

This workshop will move through a cycle of learning new concepts, offer opportunities for individual self-reflection, and include small group work to go deeper into the dynamics of our own critic experience, engaging in larger group discussions, and learning practices for effective transformation of the inner critic encounter. The workshop harnesses the power of mutual sharing and deep listening that leads to ways forward that we may never have realized on our own.

There is a registration fee of $100 for alumni. Scholarships are available for those currently experiencing financial hardship. Space is limited.
